Mrs Simpson Miller was speaking at the opening of the VIP Lounge at the Club MoBay located at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay yesterday. The occasion was used to also mark the start of the 2012/2013 winter tourist season.
The prime minister says given the benefits the industry has brought to Jamaica over several decades, there must be a continuous effort to enhance the tourism product. She disclosed that the latest figures for the period January to October of this year show there was an overall increase of 12.5 per cent in total visitor arrivals compared to the similar period last year.
Mrs Simpson Miller also noted that the World Tourism Organization is projecting that international arrivals are expected to grow by 4.1 per cent annually to 2020 and said Jamaica is moving to capitalise on this with the current exploration of new possibilities in health, sports, eco and heritage tourism.
