Mayor of Montego Bay Leeroy Williams has designated the tourist destination, Montego Bay, as "Sumfest City" for the month of July 2023. The announcement was made at the recently held media launch for the 2023 Reggae Sumfest music festival at the Iberostar Resort in Rose Hall.
While making the announcement, Mayor Williams said, “This is the first time that the city is being designated as Sumfest City, but this is a tag which I know the city and its citizens will proudly wear."
The popular music festival that started in 1993 and is held annually in July, has always been hosted in Montego Bay.
The designation, according to Mayor Williams, will help international visitors know the exact location in Jamaica, "the greatest Reggae show on earth" will be held.
He also notes that the move seeks to solidify the partnership between the promoters of Reggae Sumfest and the Saint James Municipal Corporation as the festival celebrates its 30-year anniversary.
Executive chairman of Reggae Sumfest Joe Bogdanovich also commented, "I have always thought of Montego Bay as Sumfest City so I am extremely happy that it has been made official.
Anyone visiting Montego Bay in July is aware of the buzz of excitement created by preparations for Sumfest and the many events that we host during the week of the festival."
The Reggae Sumfest festival will run for a week starting on July 16 with a family fun day at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre and wrapping with two concert nights scheduled for July 20 and July 21 respectively.
