Jamaica has been elected to serve a four-year term on the executive council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
This resolution was reached during the ongoing 68th UNWTO Commission for the Americas Meeting (CAM) taking place in Quito, Ecuador.
While celebrating this recent achievement, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said, "Jamaica has been among the top-performing countries in the Americas leading a robust recovery in travel and tourism.
Being elected alongside Colombia to represent our regional colleagues is an incredible honour, and we look forward to contributing wholesomely to the organization’s thrust to promote tourism as a driver of sustainable economic growth for developing nations especially.”
The election recognizes Jamaica's significant contributions to the travel and tourism sector, showcasing the nation's dedication to sustainable development, innovation, and collaboration.
The minister further notes that Jamaica's presence on the UNWTO Executive Council presents a unique opportunity to influence international tourism policies, share best practices, and contribute to strategic decision-making.
With a successful track record in the sector, Bartlett believes that Jamaica is well-positioned to offer valuable insights and expertise that can shape the future of global tourism.
Minister Bartlett is actively engaged in various panels, presentations, and seminars centered around tourism investment trends and opportunities in the Americas.
Among the highlights of the 68th staging of CAM was the Investment Seminar, which presented an opportunity for regional tourism into advancing investments through technical collaboration, fostering tourism development capabilities, and accessing funding mechanisms that expedite climate resilience within the regional industry.
