I like to think that I’m an observant traveler. Always have been. I noticed a huge sign near our arrival gate that said “Club Mobay”. To be honest, the first thing I thought about was ‘rum’. Giving it little thought, I continued on my way. When I was walking the floor at JAPEX 2013, (Jamaica’s largest travel product exchange conference) two days later, I was introduced to Shari Munroe, International Business and Product Development Manager. After speaking with Shari for some time, I left the discussion feeling like I had just been introduced to sliced bread.
Here’s the gist of the business model for this VIP transportation service: Purchase either an Arrival Bookings, Departure Bookings, or a bundled package of both and you’ll receive a number of specialized services that allow your experience at the airport to be convenient.
If you’re not familiar with the program, here are 4 reasons you should be:
1. Arrival Services
Disclaimer – Well having not experienced this part myself, I’m going only speak to the utility aspects of this product. I spoke with two individuals who had used Club Mobay on their arrival and both only had great things to say. Upon arrival at Sangster International Airport, you are greeted by a Club Mobay representative who escorts and ‘fast tracks’ you through immigration and customs. Yes – apparently you’re no longer susceptible to the long lines. There are also dedicated seating areas, while the Club Mobay representatives scours the luggage carousels for your luggage. If there happens to be a delay in your transportation services, they’ve also provided you with a plush arrivals lounge that includes free WiFi, snacks and beverages and other amenities. The woman I spoke with was from Toronto and couldn’t believe the convenience of the service that helped her get through customs in less than 5 minutes.
2. Departure Services
In similar fashion to the arrival services I’ve described above, upon departure a traveler will be given the VIP treatment. I was fortunate to arrive at the airport with plenty of time (3 hours) before my international flight back to Toronto, allowing me to get through my check-in quite quickly. Lucky I did too, because the line-ups for the security check was growing by the minute. When I went to the Club Mobay counter to retrieve my voucher, I was unsure what was going to occur. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself fast tracked a huge security line. Yes. I was fast tracked through 40 minutes of waiting, straight to the front of the line. I felt like a true VIP. Despite the catcalls and stink eyes, I found myself walking past a few hundred people with a huge smirk on my face (I’m sorry if you were in that line). I just came to realize one thing – My time is worth that much. After being walked through security by a Club Mobay staff, we quickly found the lounge and got settled in.
3. Lounge Services
What does one need when you arrive at an airport on either end of your trip? You need the three C’s of travel. You need convenience, comfort and class. The lounges themselves are quite convenient. Located smack dab in the middle of the terminal, so likely wherever your gate is located, you’ll be only a two to three minute walk from the departure lounge. Whether you’re looking to get some final work emails out of the way (which I was) or if you’re looking to kick back after your holidays, the lounge has seating for both.
You tend to get thirsty in the tropics and the lounge offers a great selection of drinks from flavoured waters, juices and soda pops to spirits and the ever-popular Red Strip Beer! What are drinks if they’re not meant to wash down some grub. The selection of food at the lounge is pretty decent as well. From a wide range of sandwiches to Jamaican patties, from local soups to chips and other snacks, guests never leave feeling hungry. Shari told me that they are always looking for ways to improve the overall lounge experience. This was more than evident with their approach to provide gluten-free sushi. Free Wifi and newspapers rounds out some of the great services made available to you in the lounge experience.
4. Commissions, Coming Soon’s, and How do you do’s
Recognizing the value of travel wholesalers, the company is offering 20% commission on sales.
• Their rate for the bundled Arrival and Departure Service is $80 USD per person?• Their rate for the arrivals only service is now $50 USD per person?• Their rate for departures only service is $30 USD per person.
They’re currently working on a number of new services they can offer clients including wireless phone services upon arrival. Essentially, a client would purchase this service and receive their mobile number in a confirmation email. Upon arrival your client would be met by a representative and would be presented with a phone, charger and instructions. This phone would be used for sending/receiving international text messages, phone numbers or in the event of emergency. Talk about piece of mind!
Well there you have it. The best part of it all is that this is a young company and after speaking with their business development manager at the recent JAPEX 2013, I left thinking the best is definitely yet to come. This post was just about a guy who likes things that make his life better.
